Basada en la historia corta de Bernhard Schlink, EL AMANTE cuenta la historia de Peter (Liam Neeson) un hombre que descubre que su esposa Lisa (Laura Linney) ha estado recibiendo correos electrónicos y mensajes de celular de un hombre que él nunca supo que existía. Aún en contra del consejo de su única hija, Abigail (Romola Garai), el herido y vengativo Peter vuela a Milán en busca del misterioso Ralph (Antonio Banderas) y la verdad acerca de este hombre y su relación con su esposa.
